Book Gems come from all sorts of places

January 24, 2014 By Brandon

Welcome Heather Domin to the blog. She’s here to talk to us about another Hidden Book Gem I found while wandering the internet. ~B

Allegiance - Heather DominStories come from all sorts of places – this one came from a newsboy cap.

I get most of my ideas from images, usually a random visual that pops up in my head and spins itself first into a character, then into a premise. Back in 2004 (dear lord, I just realized that was 10 years ago) I was watching an interview with an actor I had a crush on; he was wearing a gray newsboy cap, and I said jokingly to my roommate that he looked like an Irish terrorist. It was a throwaway comment (and not even a clever one), but over the next few days the image kept coming back to me, like a montage in a movie trailer: not a terrorist but a hero, running through smoky streets, dodging gunfire, trying to rescue someone he loved. Thus Adam Elliott (and his gray cap) was born. William developed just as quickly – I knew I wanted a cinematic drama with lots of danger and a love story to match, and what could be more dangerous in 1920s Dublin than falling in love with another man who’s secretly working for the Crown? I’m a sucker for the enemies-to-lovers trope. I wanted Adam and William to be two sides of the same coin, two people who had been through similar traumas but reacted to them in a very different ways. I decided to tell the story from William’s point of view so the reader could experience Adam along with him, but it didn’t take long to realize that it was William’s story I was really telling. The outline came together pretty quickly, and everything took off from there. There was so much to explore: history, culture, religion, class, love, loss, fate…. plus, you know, beautiful men with accents angsting all over the place while wearing (or not wearing) period clothes. Because newsboy cap. [Read more…] about Book Gems come from all sorts of places

Shabbat Dinner – Must See Gay Film

January 13, 2014 By Brandon 1 Comment

Shabbat Dinner - Gay FilmLast year I had the pleasure of interviewing Michael Morgenstern, the filmmaker behind Shabbat Dinner.  After winning numerous awards as the film traveled throughout the film circuit Michael has released the entire film on Youtube for you to watch and interact with. Look below for instructions about how to submit your video response and get it featured by this award winning producer.

William and Virgo both have trouble telling their parents something they might not want to hear. Shabbat Dinner is not just a film about being gay or Jewish, it’s about struggling to figure out who you are.

#WhenIToldThem is a response video campaign to Shabbat Dinner, an endearing short film about two teens coming out.

To submit:

Watch Shabbat Dinner. Think about a similar moment you’ve had: coming out of the closet, revealing something about yourself, or making a difficult or unpopular decision. A vivid and descriptive story is always best.
Film a 30sec-3min video about your #WhenIToldThem using your webcam or another camera. Be sure to include this in the video’s description: “Response video to http://shabbatdinnerfilm.com. Make your own at http://WhenIToldThem.com”

Submit the video on Youtube or tweet it to us with #WhenIToldThem, and they’ll feature it on the site! Check out the other video responses on Youtube.

Exclusive Excerpt from Guardians of the Pattern: Psi Hunter

January 10, 2014 By Brandon Leave a Comment

Welcome Jaye McKenna to the blog with a cover reveal and an excerpt from book one of her new science fiction series: Guardians of the Pattern.

Overview:

gotp-1_200x300

In my new sci fi series, Guardians of the Pattern, the line between science and magic blurs. In the Federation, psions are hunted down and murdered because the public fears their psychic talents. But when ancient weapons of mass destruction are unearthed on a planet populated by primitive nomads who still believe in magic, psions may be the Federation’s only hope for survival.

Can the people of these two very different cultures come together to prevent disaster? Or will the Federation’s hunger for power trigger a psionic chain-reaction that has the potential to threaten all of humanity?

Each novel in the five-book series features sci fi action and adventure, and a romance for a different couple. The first novel in the series, Psi Hunter, will be available in March of 2014.  [Read more…] about Exclusive Excerpt from Guardians of the Pattern: Psi Hunter

Sexuality – Not so Black and White

January 3, 2014 By Brandon Leave a Comment

Today, I have asked J. James to the blog. We’re discussing his new book, Denial, Deceit, Discovery, which tells the story of the struggles in the life of Jack Ellis, a catholic man deep in denial about his sexuality.  ~B.

Denial Deceit DiscoveryIn a recent review So So Gay said your book was ‘a thought provoking and evocative piece of literature that we found very difficult to put down’. Do you think your book is that different from the many other similar books about coming out?

J James:   I think there are a few things that make DDD different. Probably the most obvious is the honesty and frankness of the book. It is all laid our bare for the reader so that they too feel that they are living the life of the protagonist.  The level of emotion in the book is incredible and this pulls the reader in continuously. Readers will love the main character Jack in some parts and then be screaming at him in disbelief at others. The second main difference is the angle from which the coming out is portrayed. Having previously lived a straight life, Jack’s coming out was delayed and prolonged and then ultimately very dramatic when it did finally occur. It means that many people can connect with the story on different levels – gay, straight or just confused. Many of my readers have been women or straight guys because I think the story deals with relationships and the difficulties of growing up and many other wider issues and not just coming out. I think the book is incredibly relatable so such a diverse community of readers. [Read more…] about Sexuality – Not so Black and White

My Favorite Book – Natsuya Uesugi

December 20, 2013 By Brandon Leave a Comment

NatsuyaUesugiphotoI have published 4 books in the science fiction grydscaen series, with another due out next year. I think my favorite is grydscaen:beginnings which is technically the first book in the series and provides the backstory to grydscaen:retribution.

Grydscaen:beginnings tells the story of Lino Dejarre, a psychic clandestine operative of the Psi Faction and his pursuit of two escaped psychic test subjects Faid Callen, the leader of the hacker group, the Packrats, and Riuho Dejarre, Lino’s half brother who was horribly tortured at the Psi Faction. The book follows Riuho and Faid’s exploits up until their escape from the Psi Faction when they rejoin the Packrats. [Read more…] about My Favorite Book – Natsuya Uesugi
