Music Monday – Neil Cribbs

October 28, 2013 By Brandon 1 Comment

Neil CribbsMusician Neil Cribbs was playing at  the Atlanta Pride Fest a few weeks ago, and I didn’t get a chance to go. So I did the next best thing, I went over to Youtube to see what the man was about. I wasn’t disappointed, and I will make it a point to see him the next time I have a free moment. If you like blues and soul as much as I do, you’ll likely love his sound. Check him out below. You can find more on his website or connect with him on Twitter. I would also like to make note of the fact that Neil does extensive volunteer work at the local children’s hospitals, bringing music and smiles whenever he enters.

Disclaimer: I usually feature LGBT artists on this blog, but I don’t know Neil’s orientation, and frankly I don’t care. I like his music.

This is what homeless LGBT kids wake up to every day

August 27, 2013 By Brandon Leave a Comment

Last year Lost-n-Found shared a video of a ‘squat’ for homeless lgbt youth. People seemed shocked at how these kids lived and even more shocked at what they had to do to survive. One year later Lost-n-Found returned to the squat to see what had changed for these kids. As you can see from the video, not too much has changed despite the heroic efforts of LnF.  Is it because they haven’t tried? No. If anything, the volunteers are more dedicated, more active, and pushing harder to make changes.

And still the number of homeless lgbt kids has increased. The revised estimate for 2013 is that there are approximately 750 homeless LGBT children on the streets of Atlanta.  62% of these kids will attempt suicide.  When you wake up to this every day, is there any doubt as to why that number is so high?

When fear grows fat on homophobia

August 6, 2013 By Brandon Leave a Comment

We often talk about the changing landscape in LGBT issues. A lot has changed, but there’s also quite a bit that hasn’t. One of the hardest things for me when I see injustice based on homophobia is controlling my anger. I have, unfortunately, been a witness to the extremes of homophobia and it is no small feat for me to control myself when it materializes in front of me.

The talk below about fighting with nonviolence, is something I believe in wholeheartedly and I thought I would share it with you..

Is love more powerful than fate?

July 29, 2013 By Brandon Leave a Comment

In The Golden Pin (2009) Long, an avid swimmer, finds himself struggling between the expectations of his Asian family and the demands of his heart. His father wants him to marry soon, but his mother, haunted by a past romance, has other ideas. The film asks the question: Is love more powerful than fate? It seemed rather apt lately, particularly from a perspective of gay romance, so I thought I would share. What do you think, is love more powerful? Or is fate so tricky that love happens along the way?

Hold on Tight – Public Displays of LGBT Affection

July 22, 2013 By Brandon 1 Comment

Holding hands or kissing in public isn’t for everyone. When it comes to same sex relationships, showing your love outside of the home is sometimes a complicated personal choice. This short documentary moves between the public and private spaces in which lesbian and gay couples live, and explores small gestures of human connectedness. These gentle interactions not only carry a huge personal significance, but also the potent power to create social change. Yet, for most people, being affectionate beyond the hall door isn’t intended as a political statement – it’s an expression of love. ~ Anna Rodgers
