Bruce LaBruce’s new film Gerontophilia poses an interesting question. What happens when an 18 year old boy discovers he has a fetish for the aged and gets a job in a nursing home? This appears to be more than just a ‘daddy complex’ film. The young man is straight but develops an intimate relationship with an old man, setting them off on a journey of escape and illumination. It’s already being labelled as a gay Harold & Maude, but personally I’m hoping for a bit more than that. We’ll have to wait and see. 37-year-old lesbian and LGBT activist is well known in the UK for playing a detective on lesbian drama series Lip Service, as well as appearing in dramas such as Waterloo Road and Coronation Street. She was also just booked for Mardi Gras 2013 in Sydney.

When we started this writing crusade some 18+ months ago one of my first questions was how I could make a difference concerning those issues that are important to me. Making a difference doesn’t always mean a monetary donation as some believe. A difference can be made by the offer of a kind voice, and unbiased ear, a warm heart, or a gentle embrace when it is needed most. I believe too many people shy away from what matters most to them because they fear that what they can offer is inadequate.

In case you haven’t heard, the Rainbow Book Awards were announced and I am very proud to say that Listening to Dust tied for third place in the Best Gay Contemporary Fiction category.
The Value of Rain came in with an Honorable Mention in the same category at #7 and received and Honorable Mention at #5 for Best Gay Debut Novel.

Next year seems like a million miles away in writing terms. Talk to a publisher, book marketer, or an editor and they turn and look at the production board and shake their head. All the work before the holidays – release dates, deadlines, where’s the effing MS you promised…
I am all of the above: the writer, the marketer, the chastiser, the deadline harbinger of doom. Don’t get me wrong. I have help on this end. I have an outside editor and I have the people who pressed me to publish. They have also been dragged along on this journey and as we put out book four (in 18 months) they are digging through other manuscripts while my muse stands behind me with a rather large whip wondering why I can’t type fast enough. Then there are the fans, who I greatly appreciate, but the “more, more” is making things feel a bit rushed, and from my perspective, it has left my writing not to the standard I usually set.
