Making Gay Books Cool Again (in the Club)

May 12, 2014 By Brandon 3 Comments

books r coolDon’t even go home with them.

One of my first questions in the club (way back when) was…What have you read lately?

I recently had someone ask me what it told me about a person besides the genre. So here goes:

That the man opposite me liked to think/explore new things/ideas.
That he was out of college and the associated drama. (The reading list hasn’t changed in eons.)
That he wasn’t afraid to spend time alone. (Always important.)
That ‘the scene’ didn’t encompass all his waking hours and thoughts.
And, if it was a quirky title, something that I hadn’t heard of before – that he didn’t conform to faddish BS. Oprah anyone? (Always high on my list.)

So yes, I like a little more think than twink, a little more bear than beer. Personally I’ve always loved the sexy nerds. They never really had to be sexy, just a nerd, or at least someone who thought beyond next Friday.

Do you ask the men you meet in the club what they’ve read?

What do you get from their answer (if they have one)?

Have you ever asked the question before?  Or is it all about the hookup?

Maybe the gay love story you’re seeking needs more questions before the action starts…

H/T to Affinis Apparel for the cool photo.

21 Gay Writers talk about The Other Man

May 9, 2014 By Brandon 20 Comments

Welcome writer and editor Paul Fahey, who I invited to the blog after readers nominated the award-winning, The Other Man: 21 Writers Speak Candidly About Sex, Love, Infidelity, & Moving On for a 2014 LGBT Book Gem.

From the beginning, this project has been a labor of love, especially since the charity involved, the It Gets Better Project, is one near and dear to all our hearts. (A portion of the proceeds from sales of the anthology goes to It Gets Better.)

Here’s how the book happened:

The Other ManIn 2010, I met writer, Victoria Zackheim, editor of The Other Woman, at a local writer’s conference. I was immediately fascinated by her book of essays and asked if anyone had considered editing an anthology on the subject from the male viewpoint. To Victoria’s knowledge, no one had written a follow up and she immediately gave me her blessings to edit the gay companion to her wonderful book.

I immediately sent out invitations to some of my favorite male writers and asked them to contribute to the anthology. In the process, I discovered that writers either had an other man story to tell or they didn’t. It was that simple. Eventually I had a strong list of contributors and we were off and running. By early 2011, I had written a detailed book proposal, acquired an agent, the wonderful Jill Marsal of the Marsal/Lyon Literary Agency, and had a complete list of contributors attached to the book. Proud to Be Different: The Road to London

May 2, 2014 By Brandon Leave a Comment

You may have heard about it, but if you haven’t, you will.  Adriano Bulla is here to talk to us about his highly lauded novel The Road to London. Readers were quick to point me to this as an LGBT Book Gem.  ~B.

The Road to LondonWhen I started writing The Road to London, in the very same gay club mentioned in the novel, I was blessed with having no idea about what I was writing: while dancing away, words just started coming to me… I say blessed, because that may have felt like a rather daunting and, at times, ‘spooky’ experience, not knowing where you are going with a story, having no clue about what will happen to the characters and not having a ‘plan’ for her did not give me any control over her birth, on the other hand it gave me the freedom to follow the novel and not force her to fit in with my intentions. The Road to London wanted her freedom from the start. [Read more…] about Proud to Be Different: The Road to London

When Gay Meets God: Faith in M/M Fiction

April 28, 2014 By Brandon 4 Comments

Religion is a problem for me. It always has been. I won’t lie about that. I’ve personally witnessed the very worst it has to offer the lgbt community and no matter how devout, compassionate and understanding a person of faith is, I always take a step back from them. They can be straight or gay. It doesn’t matter. It’s not something I admire about myself, but it is a part of me. I don’t dislike people who hold to their faith, not at all. But my gut reaction is something I struggle with relentlessly. (And as a side note: I do consider faith and religion to be two very separate things.)  So, having come clean on that, I asked author Tim Bairstow to stop by. He is a gay man of faith who writes in the mm genre about these same struggles. I’m sure you’ll find (t)his post and his books intriguing. ~B

image-of-the-shadow-of-your-wings-tim-bairstowThe interaction between faith and sexuality in the context of the Christian Church is a subject of enduring fascination for me. Indeed, I think it’s a pretty important ‘front line’ in the on-going battle for equality. Hence, I was delighted when Brandon asked me to explain how faith interacts with sexuality in my fiction – apparently, it’s an unusual take on things.

In the two of my novels dealing with this theme, The Shadow of Your Wings and Cloven Tongues, I thought it was important to take the faith part seriously. It would be too facile just to say that someone’s faith is deluded and set out to expose it as such. Better to accept the fact that faith in God is a deep, genuine and compelling part of someone’s life. That way, it’s possible to explore the internal and external conflicts that happen when this compelling instinct collides with the deepest need of any human: to love and be loved as they are. Were LGBTQs Ever Fully Equal to Other Humans?

April 25, 2014 By Brandon 2 Comments

Ron Fritsch stopped by with a question. His book, Promised Valley Rebellion was selected by readers as A 2014 LGBT Book Gem. ~ B.

Historians seem to have found LGBTQs almost everywhere they’ve looked. When public figures such as the former president of Iran claim LGBTQs don’t appear in their part of the world, the overwhelming response is ridicule.

Promised Valley RebellionBut can we find a time when and a place where LGBTQs were fully equal to the other humans they lived with? In the Western world we often look to ancient Greece and Rome for acceptance of LGBTQs. But when we confront the details, we find something other than acceptance and equality.

The Greeks favored men having sex with adolescent boys. When the boy grew up, the relationship was supposed to end (although it might’ve continued behind closed doors). The Romans approved free male citizens having sex with slaves, prostitutes, or other males having no social standing. Clearly, neither the Greece nor the Rome of antiquity is the LGBTQ utopia we’re looking for. [Read more…] about Were LGBTQs Ever Fully Equal to Other Humans?

Losing My Con Virginity

April 20, 2014 By Brandon 10 Comments

rainbowcon2014So, I finally did it. I took the plunge and came out to visit a few of my fans. It was a pleasant experience. Humorous mostly. The ladies were so gentle, as if I was going to run away if the crowd got too thick. “You okay?” was a constant. And, other than a developing cold that had me running back and forth to the loo (to blow my nose) like a coke head, I was okay. The panels were informative. I got a chance to meet so many of the authors I know only online, and I got a chance to grab a few books too. I wanted more, but no one was manning the tables at times.

Sue Brown made my whole day right from the start when she came racing around her table speechlessly grabbing me into an embrace. Loved that bubbly little smile the moment I saw it. We had a chance to have dinner later with several others and she made quite an impression on me, enough that I asked her to bring me some real British tea when we get a chance to meet again. (Which I hope happens.)

I have just met @TheBrandonShire. I am such a #fangirl. I lost the power of speech.

— Sue Brown (@suebrownstories) April 19, 2014

But somehow I came to the Con too late and missed the strip show and the hunk flashing his hot self to one of the ladies upstairs. (Think I might try getting “lost” in the hotel if I attend another con. Don’t think I’ll be so lucky though.)

Lisa, Joann, Susan, and Jodi were a hoot, and I want to especially thank them for their courtesy and graciousness.  They made the trip worthwhile, as did many of the other authors I had a chance to meet.

If you get the chance, I would recommend Rainbow Con 2015, especially if you’re a reader looking for some great lgbt books. Or, if you’re an old cranky author who shies from the spotlight (like me), it’s still small enough that you’re not overwhelmed. Though honestly, I’m expecting this con to be one of the hottest tickets in just a few short years.

B.
