A Voice for LGBT Country Music Fans

June 16, 2013 By Brandon Leave a Comment

LGBT country music Maybe you’ve heard of Drake Jensen. Maybe not. Maybe, like me, you’ve never been a fan of country music and equated it with rednecks and bigotry. But there are new voices in the country music scene, and there are old voices dispelling the idea that all of country music is anti-LGBT.

I can’t quite remember where I bumped into him on the web, but I had a listen and I was convinced that I need to give country another listen. And maybe I need to stop equating the music with the people who listen to it and claim it as their own rebel yell to ugliness.

Drake’s brand new video (below) told me it was exactly that time. Check it out.

Van Cliburn – LGBT Music Monday

March 4, 2013 By Brandon 2 Comments

April 1958, a 23 year old gay man from Texas won the first International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow.  His album of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto became the first classical recording to sell one million copies. He was the first classical musician to get  a ticker tape parade in NYC and later the cover of Time magazine. The events and the fame that followed  never diminished his humility and kindness, but did accentuate his immense talent.  And if you erroneously believe that his music isn’t still an influence, I suggest you watch the second video.

LGBT Music Monday – Elliott Alexzander

February 11, 2013 By Brandon 1 Comment

Elliot AlexzanderA vibrant young artist, Elliott Alexzander will be someone to watch. Please note that he will not be captured within the confines of your gender stereotypes and uses multiple outlets for his personal expression. He says that when he performs he wants you to walk away feeling happy, sad, confused, and maybe even a little ambitious, and you can feel that with the massive amounts of energy he throws off.

In his own words: “I believe creativity should have no limits. One thing I would love to bring attention to through my music is the fact that music is actually changing, becoming more refined and automated. I believe as a true artist I have the task of cohesively embracing modern technology in my music but also honoring the skill and talent it takes to maneuver an instrument, such as my voice. What I want more than anything in the world is to simply feel connected with people. I want a story that will be remembered forever and inspire generations.” [Read more…] about LGBT Music Monday – Elliott Alexzander
