Interview with LGBT Author Carey Parrish

March 29, 2013 By Brandon Leave a Comment

Carey Parrish

Welcome Carey Parrish to the blog, my friend and fellow author. We’ve gone back and forth on social media but I’ve never really had the chance to chat with this amazing man. Today, we changed that. Hope you enjoy.  ~B

Of the books you have in print, which one is your favorite and why?

I would say my novel Big Business. It’s a sequel to my first novel Marengo. The reason I feel so proud of it is because I tackled the most complex plot I’ve yet written about with that one. I brought back characters from Marengo, who proved to be very popular with readers – I was still getting emails asking for more of them almost two years after Marengo was published – and I put them all in a heftier plot with a lot more intrigue and danger. I also introduced some new characters which I had a blast creating in my mind! The whole thing flowed like honey once I finished my outline and my research, and really started writing the book. And I was really proud of the fact that even though it is a sequel, it stands on its own; you don’t have to read the first one to enjoy the second. I plan to do more with this series. Special Guest Post from Author Charlie Cochran

February 5, 2013 By Brandon 9 Comments

canal_street_gothicI’ve always had a soft spot for the Albert Kennedy Trust, although my association with them started off for the daftest of reasons. I mean, as a huge fan of Archie Kennedy (from the Hornblower TV series) that name was always going to catch my eye. When I read about Albert, a runaway from a children’s home who fell to his death from the top of a car park in Manchester, having suffered rejection and abuse from society, I decided I had to support the cause of getting GLBT youngsters off the streets and into supportive families.

You can imagine my delight when I was putting together my Christmas present wish list (which is always book heavy) and found Canal Street Gothic, by David Thame, in support of AKT. It was described as a collection of ten stories set in and around Manchester’s gay village revealing the gothic truths beneath the shiny surfaces of the twenty-first century city. I had high hopes, but I’ve had them dashed before, on the harsh reality of blurbs overselling their books. So I was delighted to find this book lived up to expectations. What have you Accomplished?

December 22, 2012 By Brandon 1 Comment

changeWhen we started this writing crusade some 18+ months ago one of my first questions was how I could make a difference concerning those issues that are important to me.  Making a difference doesn’t always mean a monetary donation as some believe. A difference can be made by the offer of a kind voice, and unbiased ear, a warm heart, or a gentle embrace when it is needed most.  I believe too many people shy away from what matters most to them because they fear that what they can offer is inadequate.

But when you have nothing, when there is no one to turn to, what then? What you would label as ‘inadequate’ is a goldmine to some.  Knowledge, time, compassion are all commodities that have much, much more value than money. [Read more…] about What have you Accomplished?

Prince & Ekaj – LGBT Film

October 17, 2012 By Brandon Leave a Comment

Prince and Ekaj

Prince & Ekaj is a story about two gay Latino teenagers who are completely different from each other. One is a runaway teenager, and the other is a self-taught street hustler who spends his time wandering the streets of NYC at night looking for ways to make money. They both meet by chance and end up realizing that they depend on one another more than they think in a city that is full of crime, drugs, prostitution, and of course, hope.

Their story is not an easy one, but then surviving on the street as a gay teen isn’t easy either.

I featured the producers of this film on my blog some months back, and then brought it up again when one of the young actors was beaten and robbed in real life. The film is in the last two & a half weeks of filming and has a fundraiser event in NYC on Oct 25th and you can be a part of this monumental work of art.  Space is limited to 75 guests. Register

The absence of hope – Homeless LGBT Youth

September 27, 2012 By Brandon Leave a Comment

As many of you know I help raise awareness and funds for two LGBT charities. 10% of the proceeds from the sales of my books go to them.  Lost n Found, one of the charities, posted a video about what they find during outreach to homeless LGBT Youth.

This is how 500,000 homeless gay kids live on the street every single day. You can help by donating to either of the groups below, or by finding a local lgbt charity in your area that does the same type of outreach.

Vote for LGBT Youth – They need your help!

September 11, 2012 By Brandon Leave a Comment

lgbt nonprofitGLBTAYS is one of the organizations that I help raise funds and awareness for. We need your vote to help them secure a grant from Chase Bank. This is one of the  only organizations in the Northern Alabama area serving LGBT youth and is right smack in the middle of hostile central as far as anything LGBT goes.

All it takes is one click to change the lives of many LGBT Youth. Vote by Sept 19th.

Cast your vote for GLBTAYS and one other charity using your Facebook profile.

See the video message from founder James L Robinson below.
