Incidental Sexuality in Literature

February 21, 2014 By Brandon 2 Comments

Welcome Spring Horton to the blog. She stopped by with a subject that is getting more and more traction from both within the LGBTQ writing community and from outside of it as well. – B.

book cover4I wanted to write this guest post to discuss the future of LGBT characters in literature. I have to admit that we’ve come a long way; much further in books than in film and television. The explosion of new queer characters is amazing, especially in the male/male romance genre. And not only are droves of books being written, they also seem to be selling well, if Amazon sales rank is any indication. Now, there’s definitely nothing wrong with a good male/male romance (I’m currently working on one myself) and there’s nothing wrong with books that center around a character’s sexuality. I just wonder if we aren’t lacking in LGBT characters in mainstream books though. In almost every genre the characters are assumed, by default, to be heterosexual unless deemed otherwise at some point in the story. [Read more…] about Incidental Sexuality in Literature

Wasn’t gay marriage legal in ancient Greece?

February 17, 2014 By Brandon Leave a Comment

Andrew J Peters, AuthorWelcome Andrew J. Peters to the blog. He writes gay-themed fantasy fiction and is the author of The Seventh Pleiade and the Werecat series. In his other life, he was a social worker for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth in the New York City area. Nowadays, he balances his time between writing and working at a university.

Brandon: First, let me start with a confession. I loved the richness of the mythological lore in which The Seventh Pleiade is set. Greek mythology was a huge favorite of mine growing up and I was hooked from the start. Tell us a little about your inspiration for writing it.

Andrew: Thanks Brandon. I’ve loved mythology since I was a kid as well.

My inspiration was myth and fantasy foremost, but I also saw the main character Aerander as a young man finding his place in the world. Part of that journey is figuring out how to live as a man who is attracted to other men. Having gone through that myself, that storyline was appealing but also a challenge to write. Museum Of Broken Relationships

February 14, 2014 By Brandon 3 Comments

It’s Valentine’s Day 2/14/14. On this day we’re supposed to think of love and loved ones, perhaps more so than on any other day. But as a writer I normally approach the subject of love from the opposite end of that spectrum – broken relationships.  Heartbreak is the manna from which real human stories are made. Think about it. If every story and every relationship was a happily-ever-after, how boring would that be? And how unrealistic? (Sorry die-hard romance fans.)

watchWe humans evolve from broken relationships, we grow into the people we are, and are to become, from how, and how often, our heart is broken.  The irony with this post is that not only is there an entire museum dedicated to broken relationships, but that it sits in Zagreb, Croatia the setting for my next novel, Summer Symphony. The new novel deals with… (drum roll please) a broken relationship, a broken man, a broken woman, a broken marriage and all the outside forces that conspire to shape how those inside the relationship should view themselves. There’s Something About Albert

February 7, 2014 By Brandon 5 Comments

Julie Bozza on the blog today talking about her novel, The Definitive Albert J Sterne. Enjoy! ~B.

Albert-v1-front-200Brandon kindly asked me if I’d care to write something about my novel The Definitive Albert J Sterne, and I was very pleased to accept. But then it took me weeks to decide what to write. Inevitably, though, there was only one answer to that. A (mostly discreet) baring of my heart and soul was called for, because that was what was involved in writing Albert. My bared heart and soul.

Maybe all first novels are like that. Albert isn’t autobiographical in any literal sense. But that’s me, in words on the page, in all my essentials.

The me at the time was 29 years old, a married public servant with a mortgage, living just outside Australia’s capital city Canberra. Well, at least we had that small detail in common, I suppose: Albert lived just outside the United States’ capital city Washington.

He was brilliant at what he did, but had no social graces. At all. I like to think I had one or two – graces, that is. I wasn’t brilliant. He was barely tolerated, while I hope I was at least liked… He would think me rather pathetic for even thinking that. I love him dearly. [Read more…] about There’s Something About Albert

LGBT Music Monday – Anthony Starble

February 3, 2014 By Brandon Leave a Comment

Anthony StarbleAnthony Starble’s music has been heard on shows like “Pretty Little Liars” and will appear on an upcoming episode of “The Fosters”. His latest song “Oh Father” is bringing people, gay or straight, to tears with its gripping emotional power. “Oh Father” is a raw ballad about seeking acceptance from his father about his sexuality.

This video cuts deep, its allusions portraying what it is to grow up gay and unaccepted.

This is Anthony’s first official music video release. Find him on Facebook.

You can download this song for free on Soundcloud.
